Step-by-Step Guide to AFIP Certification

Step 1 – Order Materials

Order your AFIP Certification Program at our Pro Shop, through one of AFIP’s Industry Members or call one of our Account Managers at 817-428-2434.

When you place your order, you’ll have an opportunity to select the Course Type (Franchise, Independent or RV/Motorcycle/Marine). The cost of the course includes everything you’ll need to get certified – the hardcopy textbook, online training, conference-call study sessions and exam review, and the cost of the exam.

You may have an opportunity to participate in an AFIP Certification Boot Camp, in which case there will be an additional fee. Consult with your AFIP Industry Member provider or an AFIP Account Manager (info@afip.com) to explore this option.

From the time you order your materials, you have up to six months to finish studying and pass the test. If additional time is required, AFIP will assist you to create your personalized AFIP Certification education plan.

Step 2 – Verify Licensing

To become AFIP Certified, you must have, or have applied for, all licenses required by your state to perform your duties. This means you’re only required to have licenses if those licenses are required to do the job you’re doing when you take the AFIP exam. If you later change jobs and are required to have new or different licenses, you must apply for and receive those licenses to maintain your AFIP Certification. Failing to have the licenses required by your state is a violation of the AFIP Code of Ethics and will result in disciplinary action, which may include the suspension of your AFIP Certification status.

Step 3 – Study

You should set aside at least 40 hours over six to eight weeks to study for the exam. The how-to guide that comes with your materials shows you how to set up your online training account on the AFIP Regulation Education Platform (AFIP REP) and walks you through the rest of the process step by step.

The AFIP REP is an interactive, multimedia e-training system that will guide you through the training at your own pace. Each topic has a quiz that allows you to gauge your retention of the information. The AFIP REP tracks your progress through the system and provides a report card that identifies topics you need to revisit.

Step 4 – Schedule Study Group Sessions and Review

AFIP provides three study group sessions and a detailed pre-exam review each month. These live sessions give you a chance to solidify your knowledge and ask any questions you may have. If you’d like to join one of AFIP’s study group sessions or a pre-exam review, go to www.afip.com/events. Select ‘study sessions/final review’ to view our review schedule. Once you’ve decided which review you’d like to join, click the “Register Now” button to sign up. If you ONLY need a state review, please call 817.428.2434.

Step 5 – Take the Test & Submit Necessary Documents

AFIP has contracted with Kryterion to offer the AFIP Certification exam at hundreds of testing centers around the nation. One testing session at Kryterion is included with your certification course at no additional charge.

To schedule your exam:

  • Go to http://bit.ly/AFIPExam
  • Click “Create a new account” in the upper right corner. Complete the form and click “Save.”
  • Select “Register for an Exam,” then “AFIP Certification,” then “Get Now” next to the exam for the state in which you work.
  • Enter your Postal Code and select a Range, then hit search. Choose a testing center, then click “Select.” Select the time and acknowledge the terms. Then click “Select.”
  • Click “Continue.” You’ll receive an email confirmation; please print it for your records. You will need to show your driver’s license or another photo ID to take the exam.

Take the AFIP Certification Exam

You must pass each exam section with a score of 80% or higher to become certified.

Note: The Senior Applied Ethics Workbook has been incorporated into the exam and does not need to be submitted separately.

Step 6 – Receive Your Results

You will receive a printout with your grades before you leave the center. This copy is for your records – Kryterion will transmit the results to AFIP. If you receive a failing grade (less than 80 percent on any section), you must pre-register again and retake only the section(s) you failed.

AFIP prefers that you wait a minimum of two weeks between testing sessions and attend a pre-exam review prior to your next exam. If you fail any section twice, you must contact AFIP to initiate remediation before you’ll be allowed to test again.

When you have passed all sections of the exam, you will receive your recognition materials. Recognition material will arrive via FedEx Ground three to four weeks after you receive your grades.   Because diplomas are personalized, we are unable to expedite this process.
