Dave Robertson presented Wayne LaBroad with an Honorary Lifetime Master Award at a retirement dinner in his honor in Charlotte, North Carolina, in June. LaBroad retired from his role as Hendrick Automotive Group’s compliance manager support trainer after a 34-year career with the company. LaBroad said the award was “a surprise and a great honor.”
Dave Robertson, AFIP executive director, stated, “As a lead-by-example compliance educator for the Hendrick Automotive Group – an AFIP founding member – Wayne was most highly deserving of our first Lifetime Master Certified F&I Professional award.”
In 2013, LaBroad tied for the highest score on the Master exam among the first 75 candidates to take it. Two years later, he posted a 100% on the Master exam. Robertson’s description of LaBroad as Hendrick’s “Compliance Cop” has a backstory.
Wayne worked in law enforcement for 10 years before joining the Hendrick organization’s flagship store in Charlotte as a salesman in 1983. He became new car sales manager and worked in that role until 1989. He then spent five years working for Hendrick Sportswear, rejoining Hendrick Automotive Group in 1994 at the corporate level as national director of marketing and customer development.
LaBroad moved into the realm of compliance in 2001. Before his retirement, he oversaw compliance training for central accounting and F&I managers in 24 stores. In a recent interview, Wayne stated that what he enjoyed most during his career with Hendrick was “working with F&I managers and having a positive impact on the stores and personnel.”
Judging from the Hendrick organization’s renowned culture of compliance, he made his mark. In addition to AFIP-certifying all of its F&I personnel, the Hendrick organization uses a quarterly regulatory training system to update and reinforce AFIP training.
Asked about retirement, LaBroad responded, “Lovin’ it! I’m following in my grandfather’s post-retirement footsteps, developing my woodworking skills. I’ve already built some cedar planters for my wife.”

Author’s Note: Mr. LaBroad humbly attributed his perfect score on the Master exam to Dave Robertson’s “expertise as a trainer and ability to convey complex information on a level anyone can understand,” adding, “He’s a class act. A good guy.”
